The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists(Arthur Hill, David Wayne, James Olson, Kate Reid and Paula Kelly) racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It’s all very fascinating if you’re interested in scientific method and technological advances but it’s more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who’ve been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it’s easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton’s science-thriller empire.

Love it at 5.55 when he drops the key and you’re left trying to remember if he’s just holding the chain or has it round his wrist. Nice bit of suspense, that.

Stone should have sent some people up the shaft with Hall. They could have distracted the lasers.

I love this movie. Big fan of Michael Crichton. I heard a lecture by Dr. Crichton at the L.A. Book Fair some years ago.
But of course, the movie version has some plot holes in it. For instance, that phase of mutation Andromeda went through that eats the flesh off Air Force pilot’s bones at 20,000 feet: it’s kind of a good thing that didn’t show up at Wildfire, eh?

I think it was the alkali in the sea-water that did the trick (pH 8, nearly the same as baking soda), though acidity would have worked too as the A,S. could only survive in a very limited range of pH.

“2001, A Space Odyssey” is great though rather obscure but this is far more gripping, and, furthermore, any one with average intelligence and a minimal knowledge of science can understand it well,

I eat Andromeda Strain for breakfast , spread it on my toast like marmalade……It doesn,t dare hurt me because i,m Welsh……..The novel by the late Michael Crichton, like the movie is highly entertaining and compelling…….Crichton was a story-telling genius and sadly missed.

I seen the new version & found it far too Big Brother & anti-government preachy for my tastes, as I want to be entertained when I watch movies, not preached too.
